What to do with old garage junk: a UK disposal guide
Updated 6 November 2026 · By the Garage Decluttering team
Short answer: Most garage junk can be reused or recycled: working tools, bikes and furniture can go to charities, metal and wood to recycling, and electricals to WEEE collection points. Paint, oil, chemicals and gas bottles need special handling, and anything you pay someone to take away should go to a registered waste carrier who gives you a waste transfer note.
Where common items go
| Item | Best route |
|---|---|
| Bikes and working tools | Reuse charities, community projects or resale |
| Furniture in good condition | Furniture reuse charities |
| Old paint | Community paint reuse schemes or recycling centre |
| Motor oil and car batteries | Recycling centre oil and battery banks |
| Gas bottles | Back to the supplier or a stockist |
| Electricals and old fridges | WEEE recycling |
| Scrap metal | Metal recycling |
Your legal responsibilities
- You have a Duty of Care to check whoever takes your waste is a registered waste carrier
- Ask for their registration number and check it on the public register
- Keep the waste transfer note or receipt
- Never leave items on the street for collection by unknown collectors
When to call in help
A professional clear-out is worth it when the garage is packed, items are heavy or bulky, you are working to a deadline such as a house sale, or you simply do not have a vehicle big enough to make the trips yourself.
